Accessory Floor Mats
The purpose of this information notice is to advise customers of the importance of operating vehicles in a safe manner at all times. One aspect that can often be overlooked is the correct installation and restraint of accessory floor mats in the driver's foot well.
There is well documented world wide concern with unrestrained and additional floor mats potentially interfering with a vehicle's operating controls, especially the accelerator pedal. This concern has been recognised by automotive manufacturers worldwide as well as many accessory floor mat manufacturers.
Toyota Australia has initiated an information campaign to alert owners to this concern and to ensure that all vehicles being operated within the Dealer network are checked to ensure that any floor mats are correctly fitted and physically restrained to reduce the risk of interference with vehicle operating controls.
When your vehicle is presented to a Toyota Dealer for routine maintenance or repair, your Toyota Dealer will check the driver's accessory floor mat for correct installation and restraint. If there is more than one accessory floor mat installed or if it is not restrained correctly, the mat will be removed and placed in your vehicle's luggage compartment. Where floor mats are incorrectly fitted, your Toyota Dealer will provide guidance on the correct fitting requirements.
Some earlier versions of accessory floor mats sold by Toyota Australia were fitted with carpet retention lugs only; these mats were restrained by the friction between the mat and the carpet. Whilst no incidents have been reported to Toyota Australia in respect of these mats, this method is no longer in line with world's best practice and your Dealer will recommend that you not continue to use this type of accessory floor mat.
All accessory floor mats sold by Toyota Australia are now fitted with positive retention devices in line with this best practice philosophy.
This initiative has been instigated by Toyota Australia in the interests of customers in order to promote safe vehicle operation in accordance with world's best practice.
